I joined the Rightnowish team as the editor in August of 2019, and we launched the podcast that fall. I continued to edit the show through the summer of 2022.

Rightnowish is a weekly podcast and radio show hosted by the talented columnist and charming conversationalist, Pendarvis Harshaw. At its core, the show is for people who are experiencing monumental change in their cities and towns because of gentrification, displacement and changing demographics. We sometimes like to think of it as a community archive project, bringing you the stories of culture keepers and artists on the frontlines of history.

Below are a few highlights.

Inside Oakland School of The Arts’ classroom 302, there’s a talent showcase unlike any other. Ok, well, it’s kind of like one concert series you've heard of. Welcome to Oakland's homegrown Tiny Desk—made by and for teens.

Meet the young Latinx game dev creators behind Te Amo Mama, a video game that honors the motherhood by way of baby chicks and a mother hen—symbolic of the power of maternal figures in Latinx households

The story of longer commutes isn’t just about adjusting to a longer ride. It’s a deeper story about displacement—a subject which Oakland-raised filmmaker Danielle Thompson of Youth Beat Media grapples with every day.

Fifty years after Fredrika Newton first met Huey P., Pen sits down with the former Black Panther Party member to discuss what it's like to fall in love—and maintain a relationship—while fighting for liberation.
